OpenVPN on Windows: Route Your PC Through a Mobile Proxy

Why OpenVPN for the Whole PC

Windows has a built-in proxy setting, but its manual-proxy fields only accept an address and port — there is no username/password box. Browsers work around this by throwing a 407 prompt for your credentials, but many non-browser apps (updaters, CLI tools, background services) never ask and simply fail to authenticate. OpenVPN sidesteps the whole problem: it routes the entire machine through your German mobile IP and handles authentication through the config file. If you only need browser traffic on the proxy, a browser extension is enough — see FoxyProxy. For everything on the PC, use OpenVPN.

Before You Start

You need two things:

  • OpenVPN Connect for Windows (free, from openvpn.net)
  • Your .ovpn config file for your German mobile connection. If you use a mobile proxy from us, message us on Telegram and we'll send you your config.

Step 1: Install OpenVPN Connect

  1. Download OpenVPN Connect for Windows from the official OpenVPN site.
  2. Run the installer and follow the prompts.
  3. Launch OpenVPN Connect when it finishes.

Step 2: Import Your Config File

  1. In OpenVPN Connect, open the menu and go to My Profiles, then click the + (add) icon.
  2. Choose Upload File and select your .ovpn file — or just drag the file onto the window.
  3. Confirm the import; the profile appears in your list, ready to add.

Step 3: Enter Your Credentials

  1. Enter the username and password for your endpoint if the profile asks for them.
  2. Tick Save password if you want to skip re-entering it each time.
  3. Click Add / Connect to store the profile.

Step 4: Connect

Click the profile toggle to connect. The status changes to Connected once the tunnel is up. Every app on your PC now routes through your German mobile IP.

Step 5: Verify Your IP

Open our traffic check — or a lookup service such as ipinfo.io — in your browser and confirm the IP and location match your German mobile endpoint.

That's it — your whole Windows PC now runs through your German mobile proxy.

Per-App Instead of Whole-Machine?

OpenVPN routes everything. If you want to send only specific applications through the proxy — and leave the rest on your normal connection — use Proxifier instead; see route apps with Proxifier. For browser-only traffic, see FoxyProxy. For the plain Windows proxy fields (no auth), see set up a mobile proxy on Windows 11.

FAQ

Why can't I just use the Windows proxy settings?

The Windows manual-proxy fields accept only an address and port — there is no place for a username and password. Browsers will pop a 407 prompt asking for them, but many non-browser apps never do and simply fail to authenticate. OpenVPN (or Proxifier) carries your credentials for the whole machine, so nothing has to prompt.

Does this slow my connection?

Mobile latency is naturally higher than a datacenter link, but a dedicated German mobile connection stays stable for everyday work. Routing the whole machine adds no meaningful overhead beyond the proxy itself.

Can I connect on a schedule or keep it always-on?

OpenVPN Connect can reconnect automatically. For unattended machines, enable the reconnect option and save your credentials in the profile.
